If you were around here when Saltburn came out back in 2023 y'all know I loved Saltburn very very very much -- I also really liked Promising Young Woman (Carey Mulligan forever) and so I think it's safe to say that if the inevitable world civil war falls upon us and we're forced to take sides based on whether we like Emerald Fennell or not I will be one hundred thousand percent Team Fennell. I honestly think the people who get all bent out of shape about her are hella silly at this point. People get so angry about her! It's very weird! Anyway my side for the end times isn't switching now that Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" has landed -- I liked it a lot and my review just went up now at Pajiba so you can read all about it yourself. I'm not kidding when I say Jacob Elordi is really fantastic in this. He's really found his footing as an actor. The hunk thing we got previously, but actor-wise I'm fully sold now.

I don't think it's silly to dislike someone, you are entitled to love worship and adore her,I just don't like the fact she is an unsubtle director who feels her vision is superior to classic source material and the opportunities she has been given are obviously assisted by her background,I doubt she struggled finding funding and getting talent to help her,I like her films but mostly for the acting,Pike should have won the Oscar for Saltburn and Elordi should've got more love that awards season,he is the one who makes the film work.
ReplyDeleteI think it’s fine for anybody to not like her or her work — I’m just saying the degree to which people get infuriated by her always seems outlandish to me. Really over the top anger. You don’t see people shrieking at Julia Louis Dreyfus or Sigourney Weaver about their wealthy backgrounds this way. Yes there’s too much nepo -love in Hollywood but I don’t know how this a British woman became the poster gal for that.
DeleteThis would have been a great opportunity for a nonwhite actor to get a leading role, but of course Fennell went with another boring white guy
ReplyDeleteHuh?
Deletei didn't like saltburn at all and never saw promising young woman, but i can't say i care about the heathcliff race angle. a mid 19th-century character who is comsidered swarthy and suspected of possibly being part non-white by period standards (like possibly having Romani blood) does not actually mean non-white by modern standards. and then several other characters were cast race blind
ReplyDeleteYou are the best!! Thanks.
ReplyDeletevery overrated. the only hit of his career is actually frankenstein.
ReplyDeleteOkay but "hits" aside (because who gives a shit) turns out that he's genuinely talented and only getting better as an actor. That's all I care about.
DeleteHear, hear
