City en Scène #3

.
Working Girl (1988)
-- The Staten Island Ferry --

When I first moved to New York 20 years ago there was no better bang for your buck here in the city than riding the Staten Island Ferry for free from Lower Manhattan to S.I. and back -- I know it still exists, I just haven't done it in a good decade. I get my ferry jollies with the IKEA Ferry these days. But when you first move here it's a grand way to get a good look from the immediate outside of the city and to look back in -- to explore the shape of it, the grand contours. And just to remind yourself you're on a fucking island, which is real easy to forget from the ground level. One of my first dates with my boyfriend we cracked a couple cold boys and watched the city pass by. Anyway it's practically impossible to ride the Staten island Ferry and not get Carly Simon's tune "Let The River Run" from Working Girl's opening credits stuck in your head, and now it's your turn...
