Good Morning, World

.
A week ago I wished the director Nicholas Pesce a happy birthday and it reminded me I still hadn't seen Piercing, his latest film starring Christopher Abbott and Mia Wasikowska as a pair of predestined horrors, even though I'd had myriad opportunities (it'd played both Fantasia and the Brooklyn Horror Fests). Well huzzah I righted that wrong last night and finally watched it, bully for me -- was it worth the wait? It actually was! It's a sick little showcase for two of our best young actors, shooting their traumas thick and broad across hotel rooms like arterial spray. It's Blue Velvet draped over Hard Candy, a panorama of fetishes and fantasies asserting dominance in doom-red bordellos.

It's Clive Barker directing an episode of Mad Men. It's what might happen if David Cronenberg made his Phantom Thread. It's strange and aggressive and off-putting, and I totally saw myself in every frame. I recommend it! But only if, you know, you're down with disturbing images and ideas getting rummaged around it - Piercing, like its title, is not for the faint of heart. Okay words aside Christopher Abbott spends some time out of his clothes in the movie too, and I'll share those (somewhat spoilery) gifs after the jump...
