I feel disgusted with myself this morning - not because Claes Bang is such a piece of exquisite Euro-intellectual meat in The Square that he makes me feel that I am myself disgusting in comparison... or rather I should say not just because of that - no I feel disgusted with myself because I realize, upon inspection, that I never actually reviewed The Square! That's no good. I even went back and saw it a second time since the first time I saw it was during NYFF and was seeing a million movies just so I could properly review it. And then...
... nothing. And to be honest it's been months since I saw it now and I don't really want to write a review now either. Sigh. Well it's out online and on disc to watch, let's all watch it together and make up our own damn minds. I will say this - it's probably in my top 10 for 2017. If I ever get around to making that list. So that says something. Or it says nothing. I suppose it says one of those two things. Anyway it's early, I need to finish this coffees I am drinking, so let's hit the jump, shut our mouths, and sip our coffees while staring at Mr. Bang's sex face...
Man, I do not blame Elisabeth Moss at all for wanting to ride him. (And I'm not gonna lie, he was at his most attractive here...because of obvious reasons.)
ReplyDeleteGod, he’s hot. My main problem with the film (as with “Get Out,” to be honest) was that it made upper-class liberalism seem like the central social problem and scourge of the age. One glimpse at the White House can tell you that the alternative is a million times worse.

ReplyDeleteA totally valid critique, Owen - I just think we need to be able to criticize and make fun of ourselves; it keeps us from sticking our heads in the sand a la the FOX News echo chamber. I don't know that The Square posits we're "the central social problem of the age" - I just think it tells us to pull our heads out of our asses and look around ourselves; we're not exempt from the same narcissistic bullshit that we accuse other people of. With everything out there in the world that's SO MUCH WORSE I agree that it's maybe the time to laser focus in on the other side's BS though, FOR SURE :)
ReplyDeleteBoth “The Square” and “Get Out” were devised in the Obama era, which now feels like a paradise where you could laugh at yourself and self-criticize at will. Now, in the Fuckwad era, not so much! ;)
