Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Walter Sobchak: Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what
you want about the tenets of National Socialism,
Dude, at least it's an ethos.

I meant to re-watch Lebowski this past weekend in order to prepare for this, its 20th anniversary - I have not seen the movie since I saw it in the theater the weekend it came out. I have a really vivid memory of seeing it in the theater with my best friend Ilka at The Little (the preeminent independent movie-house) in Rochester, New York but I don't remember why the memory is so vivid - there's nothing particularly interesting about the memory, the theater didn't burn down around us or anything, and neither of us really liked the movie. Fascinating story, I am sure!

Anyway I was hit-n-miss with the Coens for a very very long time while they were generally appreciated by a certain subset of movie-lover (i.e. that obnoxious guy in your dorm who quoted Raising Arizona non-stop) in the 90s they were not the Movie Gods they are seen as now. As I see them now! Their point of view is so distinctive and their own it took the rest of us some time to key into their language - what once seemed sloppy (hello Hudsucker Proxy) now is part of an ongoing conversation.

Anyway I should probably give The Big Lebowski another chance after all these years, is my point - now that I fully appreciate what the Coens are speaking I think I'll have a new perspective and appreciation. And you should go read our pal Joe Reid's piece on the movie at Decider!
