Finally! The fine folks at
NewFest, NYC's annual LGBT film festival, have started announcing their line-up for 2017, and a movie I have been dying to see for months now is among the first titles revealed --
God's Own Country, the "British
Brokeback Mountain" as it's been coined (I can't tell if the film-makers have gotten annoyed by that comparison yet or not, but it sticks), will be the fest's "International Centerpiece" and will screen on October 21st.
I shared the trailer with y'all back in June - it's out in theaters in the UK right now and has been getting very fine notices. (A lot of people are trying to make it a competition with
Call Me By Your Name but can't we have two good gay movies in one year?)
The Opening Night film of the fest is the documentary
Susanne Bartsch: On Top, about the NYC nightlife icon nicknamed "The Queen of the Night," while the Closing Night film is a romance between Lena Hall (who rightfully won a Tony for her performance in
Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and Mena Suvari called
Becks. And the local Centerpiece Film (as opposed to the International one) is called
After Louie and has Alan Cumming falling for
Keep the Lights On's spindly ginger Zachary Booth. He freaked me out in that movie...
Anyway
NewFest runs from October 19th to the 24th -

Im seeing Gods own Country on thursday!
As someone who has seen God's Own Country, I can say that I'm sure that you'll like it. (Though comparing it to Brokeback Mountain doesn't do either film justice.)
God's Own Country is wonderful. No judgement, no one has to be punished. I wanted to call it Brokeback Mutton.
