B.P.M. (dir. Robin Campillo)
I really loved Campillo's last film Eastern Boys (read my review here) so I would have been sold on this movie on the strength of him alone, but BPM (which is about ACT UP's revolutionary actions in the early 90s) got really really seriously really excellent notices at Cannes this past spring. Alongside Call Me By Your Name and God's Own Country this year's turned into a pretty stellar one for serious gay cinema. This might be my favourite movie of the year. never has a movie where possible death looms so large over every moment, felt so vitalic and, well, alive. It's, oddly enough, a joyous and visceral gut in the punch. I really hope it'll prove to be just as wonderful a moviegoing experience for you.
Ugh. Anon. There's a really great 80-minute movie hiding inside this two-hour-plus slog. And we're the originality? Don't really see the point of making a French remake of LONGTIME COMPANION after they've made something like ANGELS IN AMERICA, or, in France, LES NUITS FAUVES. By-the-numbers Aids drama. Important subject, terrifically boring movie.
