I think that's the case for most people outside of German-speaking countries; I don't know how big a star he was over there but pretty much 95% of his credits before Inglourious Basterds were German (or German-adjacent). I actually have no idea how Tarantino found him, now that you bring it up - I wonder if he auditioned, or if Tarantino knew him from something.
I know I'll be seeing him on the big screen in November when Horrible Bosses 2 is released, I thought the 1st movie was hysterical. And Chris Pines is nice to look at too.
Is it just me but I never even heard of him until 4 or 5 years ago?
