Thursday's Ways Not To Die

.

Whammo! You're going down, John Cassavetes! And because Brian DePalma never met an excess he didn't drool all over (and bless him for it) we're taking the rest of the action after the jump because this post wouldn't be complete if I didn't attempt to capture what's about to happen in a million point five gifs. Hit it...

The Fury (1978)

Good lord, that is ridiculousness visualized. He couldn't have shot that exploding person from more angles if he'd tried. (And I bet he did try a couple more angles and they didn't work. I bet.) At Wiki they have this info:

"In order to realistically show Cassavetes exploding at the climax, Cassavetes stood on the set convulsing and bleeding until a lamp fell down creating a split-second white flash on the screen. Then a quick edit is done replacing Cassavetes with a lifesized rigged dummy exploding shot at several different angles.[citation needed] In an interview with The Talks, De Palma said that he had 8 or 9 high-speed cameras to film Cassavetes exploding. "The first time we did it, it didn’t work. The body parts didn’t go towards the right cameras and this whole set was covered with blood. And it took us almost a week to get back to do take 2."

I love the foundational illogic of that paragraph right at its start - "in order to REALISTICALLY show Cassavetes exploding." Indeed. You can see the cut between the real Cassavetes and the dummy pretty distinctly when you go through the film frame by frame like I did for this...

The lighting changes just enough to be noticeable. It's good, though. Great work for its time. Not as good as Frankenhooker's gallery of exploding crackhead prostitutes, but then, nothing will ever be as good as  Frankenhooker's gallery of exploding crackhead prostitutes. But man I miss this practical shit. I'd rather look at this than anything CG has done. Even Garrett Dillahunt getting blowed up in Looper, while pretty, isn't as good as this.

Anyway I was actually going to do this death scene for this series a few weeks ago after I saw A Woman Under the Influence for the first time and was feeling John Cassavetes anew, but I couldn't find my copy of The Fury anywhere. I'm glad I waited though, because this week saw the birthdays of actress Amy Irving, who turned 60 on Tuesday, and director Brian DePalma, who turned 73 yesterday. It was meant to be. Happy birthday, you two!

Fun movie. I saw it at a sneak preview before it opened not knowing what the film was that was to be screened. When the audience saw it was DePalma they cheered. Lots of good slow mo and split screen as I recall, not to mention some shirtlessness from Andrew Stevens and a terrific score by John Williams substituting for Bernard Herrman who had gone on to glory by the time this film was issued. Glad you know it.

My feeling has always been that DePalma was riffing on the multiple-angle, slow-motion explosions of the house, and all of its contents, at the end of Antonioni's ZABRISKIE POINT.
